Cooking in the Modern Age

I can still remember when I was little how my mom would spend hours on end slaving away in the kitchen to prepare a home cooked meal every evening. She would start early in the afternoon, slicing, dicing and doing miscellaneous prep work. And while her food always tasted amazing, I can distinctly remember making a promise to myself that I would never dedicate that amount of time to food prep.

Despite the fact that I’m now in charge of cooking all the meals for my family, I have been able to keep that promise. You may think I take shortcuts and use frozen foods and processed goods, but I’ve actually kept many of my mother’s traditional recipes intact. Thanks to newfangled kitchen gadgets, I’m able to prepare food in a fraction of the time and still achieve comparable results—although I’m hesitant to put my cooking on par with mom’s.

Stay Sharp

A dull knife is a useless knife. Testing a knife can help you tell whether it’s sharp enough. Try cutting through a ripe tomato; if the knife is sharp it will cut through the tomato with ease, if it’s not it will smash the tomato. But don’t throw a dull knife away because it can be easily sharpened.

There are two main kitchen knife sharpener options; metal sharpeners and ceramic sharpeners. Knives made of harder metal require more sharpening but will stay sharp longer.

Metal sharpeners offer a great finish to an already sharp knife because of their fine grains. Professional chefs and butchers are likely to use these sharpeners. Ceramic sharpeners on the other hand, are used primarily to sharpen stainless steel knives. Sharpeners of this type are good at thinning knife points.

Helpful Kitchen Gadgets

Kitchen Gadgets make preparing a meal easier these days.

We no longer need to haul a solid cutting board to the Wok and scrape the vegetables with a Kitchen Knife when slicing up meat and vegetables for an Oriental Stir Fry dish. Using a Flexible Cutting Board makes moving your sliced food to the pot or pan so much easier by allowing you to bend the Flexible Cutting Board right to your pan.

We can now close those newly opened bags with the Rada Quick-Grip-Clip and know those plastic bags are now secure and the food won’t fall out.

One of the Kitchen Gadgets that is nice to have around when it finally comes time to clean up is the Rada Daisy PanMate Scraper. This Scrapers’ unique design makes the easy scraping of flat surfaces, corners, and edges of pots and pans seem almost enjoyable.
