Building My Knife Set

When I got my first apartment a few years ago, I had to start my collection of kitchen supplies from scratch. At first I just purchased all of the basics, but have gradually added to my collection over the years. One of my most prized possessions in the kitchen is my set of American cutlery.

At first I just had a chef’s knife and a paring knife, and these were adequate for some time. However, I soon realized the necessity of a full set of kitchen knives to properly slice, dice and prepare appealing cuisine. My set even came with a knife block and sharpener, so I can keep my cutlery in pristine condition.

Knife blocks create a safe, simple, and an effective way of storing your knives. These blocks will keep your knives from becoming dull as opposed to being put in a drawer. Knives that are stored in a drawer can rub up against each other, creating a dull knife that does not functioning well.

The knife block helps you to keep your knives organized and within reach. Knife blocks are generally made of wood, steel or another strong material.

oakKnowing a bread knife from a paring knife will help you be more efficient and have more enjoyable sessions in the kitchen.  Straight edged knives are perfect for large scale chopping and mincing. Knives with serrated or scalloped edges will slice soft edibles like bread, cake, and tomatoes neatly.

Remember, good knives should be strong and well-balanced, and should have a forged carbon or high-carbon stainless steel blade to keep stains and rust away, and for superior cutting performance. To keep your blades razor sharp, always hand wash your knives and keep them away from the dishwasher. It is also a good idea to have an oak knife block to keep your cutlery safe and organized.
